Roma Patel will be speaking about RIOT 1831 @ Nottingham Castle, at the Open Acade.

RIOT 1831 @ Nottingham Castle is created in partnership with Nottingham City Museums and Art Galleries, Nottingham Trent University, University of Nottingham and Hot Knife Digital Media Ltd and is supported by the Digital R&D Fund for the Arts - Nesta, Arts & Humanities Research Council and public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England'. It is year long project and begins in October 2013. It will develop a mobile AR app that will offer visitors an active role in creating their narrative experience. By simultaneously interacting with relevant museum objects and animated first-hand witness accounts of the riot.

The project will examine ways that Augmented Reality (AR) can be used to help support people's understanding of a heritage site and aims to provoke debate, support learning about protest and rebellion through time and encourage participation by creating new, exciting way to tell the story of attack on the Castle made during the national Reform Bill Riots in 1831. The project places storytelling at its heart and examines the potential impact of traditional theatrical and cinematic narrative techniques to create added suspense and engagement within AR.

Visitors can choose their path and links from elements on the screen to customise their experience, allowing them to draw upon further information available in the museum and make even greater connections to the past. A new exhibition will be designed around the needs of a digital augmented environment, focussing on riot related museum objects. This new approach will allow us to highlight various opportunities and design challenges and offer solutions, guidelines and data for further development by other and similar organisations.
